Trimeric SARS CoV-2 Spike Antigen, Full-length

Coronavirus enters the host cell mediated by the transmembrane spike glycoprotein binding to the host ACE2 protein. This spike (S) protein is comprised of homotrimers with two functional subunits (S1 and S2). The trimeric protein also contains an S2’ site which is cleaved by host proteases just upstream of the fusion peptide, activating membrane fusion. The structure of the SARS-CoV-2 protein has been solved and shown to bind very tightly to the human ACE2 protein. Further investigation of the relationship between this viral and host protein will provide insight into therapeutic and diagnostic development for COVID-19.
